You can almost hear your mom’s voice in your head…
“Make sure you take a jacket with you!” Or, “Take your coat or you’ll catch a death of cold!”
When it comes to traveling (and most things in life for that matter), your mom is spot on. When you travel, you’re likely going in and out of some form of public transit and different buildings where you’re not in control of the temperature, let alone the outside weather. Bringing a quality travel jacket with you isn’t just a good idea, it’s a requirement for a comfortable traveling experience.
However, that doesn’t mean it has to be bulky, uncomfortable, or ugly. Take a look a few of these options that are perfect for fashionable travel.
If you look at this collection of designer jackets, you can see that there are plenty of bomber jackets that are form fitting, light, and downright chic. The style is incredibly popular right now, blending a retro 1920s design with a modern look that’s a perfect balance between masculine and feminine style, all of which differs slightly between brands. Rag and Bone is putting out classic pieces in leather or quilted nylon, while designers like Zara are putting out trendy, more modern pieces made of lace.
Throw it on over a fitted top and pair of jeans or leggings, and you’re good to go.
If a bomber doesn’t do it for you, and you want something a little more elegant, you could try a blazer. This overcoat isn’t just for business meetings anymore. A blazer looks just as great over a sundress as it does over a blouse and jeans.
As with any other piece in your wardrobe, the more neutral you go, the more use you can get out of it. For your blazer, try a white or off-white shade. As this “trend alert” notes, white blazers are a perfect option for those looking to exemplify the classic chic look, and with unlimited ways to make the style your own, you can always stay fabulously ready for the weather. Dress it up over a mid-thigh dress or jumper, or dress it down over a fitted T-shirt and skinny jeans.
If you plan on doing most of your traveling outdoors, a hood might be a necessity. Umbrellas are just extra weight and space in your bag. A hood is an easy, hands-free way to keep you dry comfy when the weather isn’t.
If you’re unsure which jacket is best for your adventures this season, there are generally three different types that can help protect you from the elements—lightweight, midweight or 2-layer jackets, and 3-layer jackets. Lighter jackets are best for warm weather, and are subsequently the most versatile. They’re also the easiest to pack away in your luggage when you’re not using it, especially those with a self-stowing pocket, per this article. Find one with a cinched waist, or one that’s fitted throughout the bodice, and you’ll never feel frumpy.
The absolute most versatile jacket is a leather – stylish, fresh, and unbelievably comfortable. While heavy (I know, travel poses a problem), wear this in the airport, customs, and while in transit for a put together, easy look. Leather for the most part, is seasonless. If you’ve got one, flaunt one!
Even if you’re headed to the tropics, you never know when a jacket can come in handy. Grab one, stay warm, and make your mom proud.
