Mental Health isn’t something that is spoken about nearly enough on social platforms. And sometimes, that feels a bit lonely. Opening up this dialogue can create a form of support, and provide hope on the tough days. I find that as the weather gets cooler, and the days get darker, my mood drops even further. Seasonal Affective Disorder (otherwise known as S.A.D), affects so many people around me. It makes the holidays and this time of year a lot harder to cope with. It’s important to be kinder to yourself, and make sure you’re taking the steps to self love. I’ve found a few things that help me get through those glum days, and I hope these can help you too!
This is probably one of the most important things you can do for yourself to keep your mood elevated. And, on the lowest days, I find this to be the quickest way to find relief. A simple walk can even do the trick, especially when an entire workout isn’t feasible. I also love doing a quick yoga routine in the morning to get my day started. Getting your heart rate up releases endorphins, and elevates your serotonin levels. The perfect pair to get your happiness flow goin’.
Sunshine cures all. Something about soaking in those rays can make the worst days so much better. As the cold weather arrives, sunshine becomes all the more scarce. Vitamin D is essential, it helps to absorb other essential nutrients in your body. It’s especially important to your mental health, studies directly link low levels of the sunshine Vitamin to depression and S.A.D. Taking a supplement can help combat the low feelings, and alleviate the affects of the dreary – sunless weather.
This is something I’m consistently preaching to all my loved ones. Being mindful doesn’t necessarily mean mediating (something I personally suck at). Practicing mindfulness is all about being aware of your surroundings, and practicing gratitude. There are many simple therapeutic techniques that you can do during your day. One of my favourites is breathing deeply for a few minutes. Focusing on my breathing grounds me. This keeps my thoughts in focus and aligned, so I can get back to a better mental state.
What makes you feel the happiest? Accepting that your mind (and body) are undergoing a change, is a huge indicator that it might be a good time to create your own positivity. Engage in activities that you know will bring you happiness. This might be making more time to see your friends, or knowing when you need to take a step back from social activities. During this time, I try to spend more time outdoors with my favourite peeps.
I hope these tips make your glum days more cheery, and help you feel stronger than ever!
