Cristina Sabaiduc is hands down the coolest. She always has emanated that London effortlessness when it comes to being self-assured, stylish, and coyly confident in her designs. Flash back to 2009 when it was Alternative Fashion Week in Toronto, and I stuffed myself into one of her wild chicken-caulking designs and squeamishly walked down a blinding runway. Two weeks later, we miraculously ended up being seatmates on a flight to New York, and the rest was history.
So, where’s this maven now?
It’s 2015, New York, do you know where your fashion designer friends are? Cristina walked me through a plethora of her stunning, premium pieces. Fashioned (no pun) together with stunning printed silks (in scarf and billowing dress form), high performance athletic wear (over 100 gold medals won while wearing this material), and only with the most original draping…these items are to covet.
She chats about the nerve-wracking nature of shooting her muse (Willow Riley) in analogue for her lookbook. Daunting to know that you have to put the faith into the film, but Cristina wears the risk well. The collection is captured in her lookbook as delicate yet edgy, snazzy while effortless. East London grunge meets West London Brunch. It’s Vancouver meets London, in all the right ways.
We gabbed some, we giggled some, all while listening to alternative music faded lightly into the background. The New York skyline backdrop was a beautiful setting to catch up with an old friend.
